about

Singing songs for people allows me to see again and again how music transforms us. It can move us literally and figuratively, and often both. Luke was moving to the rhythms of our guitars and, I believe , the vibrations of the natural world of sun and wind. I loved watching him find his own solitary way of letting the music, both natural and guitar-made, transform him apart from the rest of us. I want to live that close to music's power and nature's song.

Number 28 is for Luke (written and recorded at Outlaw Ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota).

lyrics

Number Twenty Eight, July 12th, 2012

Luke

Luke dances to the sound of guitars
Face in the sky and free in the sound
Under the aspen the sun finds his face
And the harmony holds him, moves him 'round
As the music plays

Sometimes I feel out of key myself
Voices and noises are harsh to me
Rhythms and rhymes seem to hide away
And I trip on the trying of all I can't be
Still that music plays

So Luke, I will listen and I will move
To the vibrations of the world I find
You're what I see when I close my eyes
With the sun on your face as you're moving in time
Where the music plays
